Fun Facts -
The M47 used in the 40’S-60’S is built from thin sheet metal. It is approximately 8” (200 mm) in diameter and 48.9” - 51.9” in length. A box type fin assembly was permanently welded to the bomb body. around the body are 2 suspension bands that are removable and adjustable spaced at 14” apart which provide suspension lugs for horizontal suspension.
These bombs were painted blue-gray with bands near the center of the body
designating the type of filling.
3.04 cu ft.

THE 3 TYPES OF FILLER OR EXPLOSIVE CHARGE ARE:
They were filled with:
(WP) - white phosphorous - smoke
(PWP) - plasticized white phosphorous - smoke
mustard agent (H)
incendiary.

Smoke bombs are generally used for screening purposes to conceal combat areas, the movement of troops and ships, for marking targets and for anti-personnel effects. The standard filling of these bombs is plasticized white phosphorous (PWP), which is a smoke-producing agent. White phosphorous (WP) has a mild incendiary effect and will set fire to materials having a low kindling point, such as clothing, dry brush, paper, canvas, etc.

The band colors were:
Purple for incendiary
yellow for smoke
green for gas (casualty agent), one band for nonpersistant gas and two bands for persistent gas.
