All Replica bombs are build from light weight composite materials and aluminum. All threads are identical and interchangeable with the genuine article. Metal fins are powder coated. THIS ITEM IS FOR DISPLAY ONLY
ASSEMBLY REQUIRED. This replica will need minimal sanding and repair work. Steel fins will need to be spot welded and Aluminum fins will need to be riveted with aircraft style rivets (provided). The fins will need to riveted to the fin collar.
MUSEUM QUALITY VS. STANDARD
Museum quality construction fins attach to the bomb body same as the original. Four fins are riveted or spot welded together then attached to a round fin caller. The fin assembly is fastened to the bone body with a large 5” nut. The replica fin nut has the basic design and thread pitch as the original. The fins are removable. This version is our most realistic version.
Standard Construction - The fin caller and fin nut are part of the bomb body. They are molded as one fiberglass piece. The fins are not removable. The lack of machined parts brings the cost down. The detail of the fin attach point is still good but not as realistic as the Museum quality.
Both versions have fuse wells to accept real or replica fuses.
COMPLETE VS. KIT
Complete - ready to go. No work is required.
Kit - Stage 1 - Replica is fully assembled but unpainted. Diagram for yellow bands and stencil placement and stencil is provided.
Kit - Stage 2 - Replica is unassembled and unpainted. Any necessary hardware and stencil is provided.
Kit - Stage 3 - (stripped and raw) Replica is unassembled and unpainted. It also lacks nose and tail fuse wells and has a lighter construction and will require a little more finish work. This is our best attempt to keep the price as low as possible.
The AN-M44 was used in the first half of WWII. It contains 2 Army suspension lugs spaced at 14" and will mount on 14" bomb shackles. The AN-M65 was used in the later parts of WWII. It also has 2 Army suspension lugs spaced at 14" and a Single Navy dive bomber lug on the opposite side. The stenciling varies between the two models. Other then that the replicas are identical.
AN-M65/ AN-M44 Fun Facts
BOMB, G. P., 1,000 LB., AN-M65Al- STANDARD. The bomb is made of steel with cylindrical body and box-type fins. It is 69.5 inches long and 25.4 inches across the fins. The center of gravity is 26 inches from the nose. Two suspension lugs, 14 inches apart, are provided for suspension in horizontal racks. The explosive filler consists of 459 pounds of cast 50-50 amatol, and 39.6 pounds of cast TST surrounding the fuze boosters. An alternative filler is 547.1 pounds of cast TNT. Still another loading is 571.4 pounds of Composition B
Principle of Operation: During bomb’s release from the aircraft, the propeller (vane) rotates, allowing an impeller to spin. After a certain number of revolutions, the fuse becomes armed, allowing it to function. When the bomb impacts the target, the firing pin punches the detonator causing it to detonate, activating the booster charge, which causes the main charge to function. These bombs are equipped with nose and tail fuses. The common nose fuse is the AN-M103 and the tail fuse is the AN-M101A2. The fuzes can be set for instantaneous detonation or up to 15 second delay.
The old GP bombs are a relatively thin-cased with an ogival nose, parallel side walls, and a tapered aft section. A new series of bomb was developed and standardized in 1939. The “M” series demolition bombs were cylindrical in shape with a box type tail assembly. The GP is distinguishable from the M-series by the base plug in the tail and a single suspension lug in addition to two Army lugs. The single suspension lug is used on dive bombers and the dual suspension lugs, 14 inches apart, were use in horizontal bomb-racks. Designed originally for anti-personnel or such targets as ammunition dumps, railway rolling stock, ordinary buildings, supply depots, grounded planes, and aircraft installations. The standard explosive filler is amatol. Alternate fillers are TNT, composition B, and Tritonal.
